First Lego League (FLL) is a program and citywide competition for children ages 9-14. It is designed to get them excited about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), while teaching them valuable employment and life skills.
First Lego League releases a Challenge every year regarding an important, real world issue. This year's challenge is called Animal Allies!
For the 2016-2017 season our challenge is all about the interactions between animals and humans. The relationship between animals and humans isn't one sided, they are usually interdependent.
The Challenge is made up of three parts: the Robot Game, Project, and Core Values. For more information, check out the FLL Trash Trek Challenge video here.

Last year’s Project, a research task, was to identify a problem with the way we make or handle trash. The team created an innovative solution to the problem they researched. This idea should be something that adds value to society by improving something that already exists, using something that exists in a new way, or inventing something totally new. This idea will then be shared with members of our community.

Similarly, the Robot Game deals with the way we dispose of our trash. The students built and programmed an autonomous robot (using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT kit) to score points on a playing surface that has obstacles and missions related to the disposal and reuse.
For more information, check out the FLL Animal Allies Robot Game video here.
These two tasks are to be executed using Core Values, a set of guidelines that ensures teams are using teamwork and Gracious Professionalism® while competing. These ideas guide us to work effectively and cooperatively, while having a good time!
